How to Train for a 5k, Episode 7, Black and Abroad

I ran a 5k last weekend and reached my goal of finishing under 30 mins. It felt so good because I’ve been preparing for it for a month and a half. After my recent breakup I felt I needed a challenge to focus most of my time and energy. Also, I noticed that I was in an exercise rut where I had gotten bored with my workouts. So when one of my coworkers mentioned a marathon I jumped at the chance. This was my first marathon in South Korea so I am happy to have gotten to experience it here. They do things a little differently than we do in North America. For instance, all the participants running the same course get to stand where ever they’d like at the starting line. Whereas in the race I did in Ottawa you were asked how long it would take you to complete the run and that determined your number and where you stood at the finish line. Another difference was that after the race one of the refreshments offered was magkeolli/makkoli, a Korean rice wine. Yes you read correctly, alcohol. Lol!

Overall, it was really good vibes race day. Everyone was really happy and friendly and it felt nice to be a part of it. Next i am going to run a 10k and I’ll be starting my training for that next week. In the meantime, I was asked how I prepared for this 5k so checkout the video below for my experience and tips. Let me know if you have any other tips or just enjoy running.
